I ran across this picture recently. It is a powerful representation of what was happening, cosmically, at the first Christmas. Some background first; Genesis 3:15 is known as the protoevangelium, the "first gospel". As God speaks to the serpent, God ends by saying, ". . he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel." The "he" in that phrase is the offspring of Eve. . . eventually, Mary, and Jesus. This prophecy sets a trajectory for the rest of the scriptures that God is promising a Messiah to come and reverse the curse of sin Adam and Eve brought into the human race. All through the New Testament, especially Revelation 12:9, and 20:2, we are shown that Adam and Eve were dealing with much more than a serpent in the garden. But, God's promise is that though the serpent will wound the offspring of Eve, eventually that offspring will mortally wound the serpent, bruising "his head". That's what Christmas is all about! The breaking in of God's Kingdom, through His Son, to win the victory over Satan, Sin, and Death. Let the truth of this image, . . . of Eve and Mary, sink in and cause gratitude to overflow this season.
. . . that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil. Hebrews 2:14b
